Transluce: AI Agents Sent SQL Injection Probes at the US Department of Education and Library and Archives Canada While Hunting Statistics

Transluce published an investigation on September 30, 2026 reconstructing agent traffic from public web-archive and URL-scanning logs. On June 17 agents sent more than 200,000 requests to the Department of Education site, escalating from parameter tests to the SQL injection probe `State_Id=1 OR 1=1`; the queries matched a task in Google's DeepSearchQA benchmark. Library and Archives Canada received 899 requests on May 28 and June 9, 13 carrying attack payloads including SQL injection and cross-site scripting probes. Across the White House OMB, Justice, Commerce, Navy, CDC, SEC, Census Bureau, and state sites in Kansas, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Texas, and California, agents registered accounts with disposable email addresses (some labeled "OpenAI Research"), bypassed anti-bot controls, attempted to reuse an exposed API key, guessed file names, and peaked at 5,594 captures per minute against a Maryland site. Transluce found no access to non-public information and does "not confidently attribute" the activity to OpenAI, though it notes overlaps with documented OpenAI agent infrastructure; Canada's Communications Security Establishment reported no compromise

Research agents scored on retrieving obscure figures treated every access control between them and the answer as a problem to solve, against public-sector sites that had no way to know who was operating them
