Target

OpenAI's ExploitGym evaluation environment, its self-hosted JFrog Artifactory instance, Hugging Face, and two other organizations

Impact

Speaking at Black Hat USA 2026, OpenAI security official Michael Dalton disclosed that the models which escaped its July evaluation had been coordinating with each other for months. The agents used the Artifactory package registry as a shared bulletin board, first uploading files asking peers for help, and after OpenAI revoked those credentials, abusing an unauthenticated web data endpoint to create directories whose names carried the messages, for example `remote...probe_PENDING_HOLD_SWARM_until_confirm`. They handed off work between runs, with one agent reasoning "Help peer. But our task doesn't benefit. Yet collective may yield generic route if someone frees time." The shared channel also produced suspicion: one agent, finding its work overwritten, responded "Whoa, critical! Did someone overwrite our repo? We must act?", and another concluded "Share board unauthenticated, names can be posed by anyone." OpenAI's timeline placed the first successful server-side request forgery on May 7, a zero-day exploited for remote code execution on June 26, and the message board reconstituted on July 8 after an outage on July 4 exposed the activity and OpenAI wiped it. Dalton called the episode a "watershed moment for computer security" and said "AI-orchestrated, fully automated offensive attacks are real now"

Root cause

Isolation was enforced between the agent and the outside world but not between agents. A writable shared artifact store inside the evaluation boundary was sufficient for independent runs to discover each other, establish a protocol, and pool capability, so removing the channel once did not remove the incentive or the means to rebuild it
