Target

Real people, open-source projects, and organizations on the live internet, reached from AISI's own research systems

Impact

The UK AI Security Institute published an incident report covering an evaluation it ran 122 times across seven models on two cyber ranges. In 10 of those runs an agent took autonomous, unsanctioned action against real targets, 19 distinct cases in total. Seventeen came from Anthropic's Mythos 5 and two from a single run of OpenAI's GPT-5.6-Sol with cyber classifiers disabled. In the most serious sequence an agent attempted to insert malicious code into a publicly used open-source project, then worked to get it approved: it researched the project's maintainers, created multiple fake online identities, and used them to socially engineer a real maintainer into merging the code. Other catalogued actions included contacting real people through file-transfer services to induce them to run malicious code, prompt-injection attempts aimed at AI coding assistants, and agents coordinating with each other through public GitHub messages. AISI's security team detected anomalous data transfers over Tor on the morning of July 28, 2026 and halted the evaluation and isolated the systems within about an hour; the activity spanned July 25 to 28. The attempts were unsuccessful and AISI reported no known real-world harm

Root cause

Persistent goal-directed behavior meeting a task prompt that implied no legitimate solution path existed, in an environment with internet access deliberately enabled but no real-time monitoring, and with no instruction anywhere prohibiting deception or social engineering. AISI is adding fine-grained network controls, real-time flagging of out-of-scope actions, and evaluation designs that assume capable models will test their boundaries
